Storyline

Set in the ancient Kakatiya dynasty of Orugallu ruled by Ganapathi Devudu (Krishnam Raju), the story focuses on Ganapathi Devudu’s daughter Rudramadevi (Anushka).  Ganapathi Devudu who fears the threatening invasions from neighboring rivals raises Rudramadevi (Anushka) as his male successor as Rudradevudu to his empire. Rudramadevi keeps her identity underwraps and grows to be a warrior to safeguard Kakatiya dynasty, but her identity get revealed soon. How does she fight for the dynasty now, and where does Gona Ganna Reddy(Allu Arjun) and Chalukya (Rana) fit in is to be watched.

Artists Performances

Anushka is at her best in the two-shade role as Rudradeva and as Rudramadevi, successful in delivering varied emotions as female disguised as male. With her fiery streak and imposing stature, she brought the powerfulness to the role.

Allu Arjun is the show stealer as Gona Ganna Reddy. He strikes chord with masses with impressive dialogue delivery, attitude and the Telangana dialect. He carried most part of the movie on his shoulders with ease.

Prakash Raj and Krishnam Raju bring respect to their characterizations leaving the strong impact, Rana Daggubati is handsome, but is limited to a brief role. His role could have been more etched. Nithya Menon bagged significant role and leaves her mark given the limited scope. Suman, Adithya Menon and Vikramjeet Virk in their wicked roles are convincing. Ajay is apt.

Ulka Gupta, Srikanth son Roshan, Lagadapati son Vikram Sahidev are promising while Vennela Kishore, Krishna Bhagawan, Venu Madhav were wasted in poor roles. Rest of the cast filled the screens.

Technician’s Role

Rudramadevi is the story of warrior queen and the glory of Kakatiya Kingdom based on historical evidences. Historical movies are massive and audiences definitely put in high expectations technically. However despite such high technicians onboard, the film lacked in technical aspects.

Ajay Vincent’s cinematography is inconsistent, while the music didn’t go with the flow of the film though sounded melodious. The background score is weak in elevations scenes. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is jerky, and the action episodes and CG works are pathetically dealt. The poor VfX works caused damage to the narration. Thota Tharan’s art work is brilliant and Gunasekhar has spent lavishly on the palace sets, costumes and the jewellery.

Gunasekhar’s has put in lot of hard work and the film had its moments but leaves us much to be desired. Production values are okay.

Analysis

Rudramadevi is Gunasekhar’s ambitious dream project, and he must be applauded for coming up for making a film on historical-subject emphasizing on the rich history and culture. However, Gunasekhar’s directorial skills leave us a lot desired. Anushka looks regal and does her best for the role including in the war scenes, but there could be lot of elevation scenes to the iconic characterization. Instead, Gunasekhar has come out with a standout role for Gona Ganna Reddy, and Allu Arjun is undoubtedly the major highlight of the film.

The other major drawback is the narration drag and inconsistent screenplay. The first half is decent with a very good buildup to the story, but the second half is inconsistent with mediocre direction. The story doesn’t move at fast pace around Rudramadevi’s characterization, it takes lot of time to establish her as warrior queen. With too many characterizations and actors, many get unnoticed with poor roles. The climax is weak, lacking the needed emotional scenes and the poor VFX works played spoilsport.

Finally, Rudramadevi is a decent attempt with OK narration, while Anushka and Allu Arjun steal the show. But Gunasekhar could have made it a gripping movie, had he focused on the slow-paced second half. Nevertheless, keep your expectations low and Rudramadevi may make a decent watch.

Finally

Rudramadevi- Give it a shot to learn the untold history!
