Mumbai, [7th Sep] – With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching, actress Sheena Chohan reflects on her deep connection to Marathi culture, a bond she developed while portraying Avali in the upcoming film *Sant Tukaram.* This role, which marks Sheena's Hindi debut, opposite Subodh Bhave , directed by Aditya Om, has been a transformative experience for her, both personally and professionally.
Playing Avali, the devoted wife of Sant Tukaram, gave Sheena the opportunity to delve into the rich history and traditions of Maharashtra. "Avali is such a strong and inspiring figure in Marathi culture," Sheena shares. "She was a symbol of unwavering strength and support. Preparing for this role involved countless hours of studying texts, learning about Tukaram’s life, and immersing myself in Marathi customs. It brought me closer to the heart of Maharashtra and its vibrant traditions."
For Sheena, this research went beyond just understanding the character—it was about embodying the essence of Marathi life. "What sets Marathi culture apart is the sense of community and devotion," Sheena reflects. "Avali wasn’t just a wife; she was a symbol of Shakti, resilience, and grace. Through this research, I gained a deep respect for the values that define the Marathi way of life—something I’ve carried into my own."
Now living in Mumbai, Sheena feels that these cultural insights have enhanced her personal life, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi, one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated festivals. "Ganesh Chaturthi has always been a big event in Mumbai, but after playing Avali, the festival has taken on a whole new meaning for me," she shares. "It’s not just about the rituals and celebrations, but the spirit of togetherness and devotion that make it so special."
Sheena fondly recalls her first Ganesh Chaturthi in Mumbai after embodying Avali. "There’s something magical about watching the city come alive during this time. The decorations, music, and prayers are all heartwarming. One of my favorite traditions is joining the evening aartis. The energy, faith, and joy of the devotees are contagious. It’s a moment where I feel deeply connected to the community—something I look forward to every year."
With the upcoming release of Sant Tukaram, this year’s Ganesh Chaturthi holds a unique excitement for Sheena. "This Ganesh Chaturthi feels different, almost as though I’m celebrating it alongside Avali herself. The devotion, duty, and reverence for Lord Ganesha resonate more deeply now that I’ve lived through her story," she says with a smile.
As Sheena prepares for her Hindi debut in Sant Tukaram, she is eager to continue taking on roles that allow her to explore and connect with diverse Indian cultures. "I believe in fully immersing myself in my characters, understanding their essence, and bringing that authenticity to the screen. Avali has left a lasting impression on me, and I’m excited to share her story with the world."
For Sheena, Ganesh Chaturthi will always hold a special place in her heart—not just as a festival but as a reminder of the powerful stories and traditions that unite us.
